![]() ![]() In conclusion, the thesis aims to prove that Panji-culture is high in potentiality and is regarded as an intangible cultural heritage of Indonesia regardless of the inscription on the Representative List. furthermore to outline the symbolic meaning of the Panji stories which comprise simplicity, harmony and fertility (2) discussing the implementation of the Panji-culture nowadays which is reflected in the media, in art activities, and in scholarly activities (3) to demonstrate that it is worth being nominated on the Representative List and to outline the conditions of inscribing Panji-culture on the Representative List. This thesis has three major purposes: (1) to outline the potential of this indigenous culture by providing a historical background of the Panji stories, their representations in literature, fine arts, performing arts in Indonesia, as well as in Mainland Southeast Asia. In addition, I made use of sources such as academic papers, popular literature, local newspapers, and internet websites. ![]() ![]() The research method I used to collect my information is primarily based on academic literature and accessed through the OPAC system of the university library in Frankfurt. The success of the acculturation process of Islamic culture in wayang make the art as a media become a medium of da'wah that can be accepted well to spread the religion of Islam. But what is interesting is that Wayang persist until the modern era and it is considered to be the key to success in the spread of Islam in the archipelago, especially in Java. The arrival of Islam in the archipelago is feared to eliminate existing local cultures and traditions including Wayang as a symbol of the culture because it is considered incompatible with Islamic values. Moreover, Islam as an Abrahamic religion comes from every different cultural roots from Hindu-Buddhist culture. The arrival of Islam into the archipelago is like giving a challenge to the already established and accepted Hindu- Buddhist culture in society. Thus came Wayang (Puppet Show), an art that can represent both philosophical and moral values of Javanese Culture. The arrival of the culture also influenced the art that existed in Java as a form of expression of their cultural values and their daily life. The culture had come since early century AD which then merged and assimilated with local culture so as to form a new culture and civilization in the community of Java Island, redefining the values and the way of life of the locals for a long period of times. ![]() The Island of Java and its culture for a very long time was much influenced by the dominant Hindu-Buddhist culture. ![]()
